To the brave, resilient, inspiring, wonderful people of Japan,

I bear witness to your bravery and suffering, and to your losses. I bear witness
to your forbearance and patience in the face of devastation and hardship.
I bear witness to the way that all Japanese work together to help each other,
and the respectful way that Japanese treat their countrymen and women,
and others there who are suffering or who are there to help -- with incredible
integrity and humility.

Nearly 27 years ago, I was an exchange student in Niigata-shi, Japan. It was
the first time that I was away from home, but a I was looked after and cared for
by a wonderful family and a wonderful community in my friends and students
and teachers of Niigata High School. And, everywhere I traveled, from Niigata
to Tokyo and back, I felt at home and cared for by a country and by a people.
I am forever grateful and while I know that the greatest impact of this earthquake
and tsunami was far from my adopted home city (this time), I know that everyone
there is sharing in the sadness, as well as in the sense of hope and renewal
that will follow.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and for a speedy recovery and for a sense
of peace that I hope will come, eventually, to those who are grieving.

With great respect,
